Wide Awakes was started in 1966 to provide social and recreational activities for adults with physical and developmental disabilities. The program provides a variety of social or recreational experiences two or three times each month that may include pizza night, monthly club meetings, dances, and shopping.

Wide Awakes is professionally staffed but is self-governed with member-elected officers. There is a membership fee and members must pay their own expenses.

Many adults with special needs can often feel isolated. Social interaction and activities are extremely important in helping the individual live a fulfilling life. The program is designed to replace any feelings of helplessness, isolation, and frustration with an enhanced sense of independence, confidence, and self-esteem.
